Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as his assistant manager ahead of next season, this is according to report.
After making a name for himself with Tottenham, Carrick was signed by Sir Alex Fergusen as a replacement for Roy Keane in the summer of 2006. Carrick enjoyed a trophy laden spell in his 464 appearances with the Red Devils but he will now be a key figure in the backroom of the club.
Carrick has decided to hang his boots this summer and will immediately transition into the coaching, as a direct replacement for Jose Mourinho’s long time time friend and assistant Rui-Faria, who has been heavily linked with the Arsenal job.
The ex-England international played his final game for Man United against Watford in the 2017/18 Premier League closing day, where he set up Marcus Rashford’s goal. And Mourinho said afterwards:
“I will organise my coaching staff in a way where the assistant manager figure doesn’t exist.
“I am going to have assistant coaches, fitness coaches and a structure where we have specialists in different areas connected to performance.
“The particular reason is I think it will be Michael Carrick in the future — when he has his badges.
“Then he can make the bridge between a player to an assistant.
“When Rui is leaving after 17 years, I have nobody in the world of football ready to be my assistant. So I prefer to structure my staff in a way where there is education and improvement.
“And when Michael has the pro licence badges along with the personality, friendship and honesty he has, I think it will be for him.”
Carrick is held in high-esteem at United who was technically and positionally intelligent – he was Man United captain on several occasions and he’s currently regarded as a legend at United,
